Excellent rack with one caveat
By Jayhawker from Lawrence, KS on 8/15/2007
Pros:
Durable, Stable, Easy to Use, Easy to Install
Cons:
Scratches Car
Best Uses:
Sedans
Describe Yourself:
Avid Cyclist
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This rack fills the bill for an easy to install, solid stable rack. It is perfect for quickly removing and installing. The one problem is that if you own a hatch back like my Subaru Forester, the straps that hook on to the top of the hatch back rest on the paint as they come over the top and bend down towad the rack itself and scratch the paint. The local bike shop where I bought the rack communicated with Saris, and, after two tries, got some plastic strips from them to apply to the car to prevent the scratching. I actally like this solution as I don't have to be so worried about the car being clean when I install the rack. I removed one set of plastic strips without problem and am assuming the set currently on the car will come off as easily. If you own a station wagon or hatch back and don't want to risk applying plastic strips to the car, you might wait until Saris solves this problem before you buy this particular rack.

A Great Find!

I looked long and hard for a solid bike rack that would carry several bikes, not scratch my vehicles and be easy to install. I pretty much narrowed my search down to the Bones 3, but after talking with a bike store manager over the phone, he convinced me I needed to look at the Bones RS also. The Bones RS, by far, turned out to be the best trunk rack I ever saw. It wasn't cheap, but I feel I got a great rack for the investment. It fits my 2002 Ford Windstar and 1999 Ford Contour perfectly. The adjustable arms (width) was something I also found very useful. The first Yakima rack I tried (Big Joe 3) had arms that were too far apart. Yakima suggested the King Joe 3; however, none of their trunk racks would allow 3 bikes to be placed on my 2002 Ford Windstar -- 2 was the maximum! The Bones RS allows 3 bikes because it mounts on more solid areas of the mini-van's back door. You'll love how easy it mounts and dismounts! You can do it in seconds. No messing with straps that get all tangled and have to be adjusted. The ratcheting system is great! I highly recommend this rack to others!

Easy to put on the car, secure & stable
By Sterne Verified Reviewer from Seattle, WA on 8/10/2007

Best Uses:

I am using the Bones RS to take my bike and my small child's bike to various parks and trails. While it is extremely solid, and unbelievably easy to install and remove from the car, I do wish the rack used a different system to secure the biles to the rack - I find it hard to fully tighten the straps to the bikes. The Yakima King Joe that I used for a couple of days, while inferior in every other respect, used thick, stretchy rubber bands and I found those easier to adjust. I also have not found a way to use two adjacent locations for the two bikes - the tires from the large bike interfere with the handlebars of the small bike. So I use the first and third positions. I have only used the rack for 2 bikes; I'm not sure it would be usable for three bikes of different sizes. Overall, though, the ease of installation, and incredible solidity of the rack make it worth the high price, despite my quibbles.

Rack was installed in less than 8 minutes. It is very solid with no rocking. It feels as if it is part of the car. I especially like the steel reinforced belts and the locking mechanism which allows you to lock your bike to the rack itself while you are away. It's a bit expensive but it will last a very long time.

Great Bike rack. It extremely sturdy (heavy) and fairly easy to set up. I have a spoiler which probably makes it a little bit more difficult. There are Key locks which prevent the Rack from being removed from the car (separate lock is needed for the bikes). This has to be the best Trunk rack on the market, but you will pay for it.

A winner!

After one week of use the Saris Bones RS seems to be a great option for a trunk mounted rack. It took the bike shop and me about 20 minutes to figure out how it worked, but now it's a snap to attach (about 30 seconds) and remove (about 20 seconds). Bikes load very easily and don't move. My old bones made a lot of noise with a bike on board. Not a peep with the RS. You can't open the rear hatch with the rack attached, but it's easy enough to install and take off that this is not a limitation. The rack is heavy and is a bit pricey but beats the cost of adding a trailer hitch and buying a hitch mounted rack. I did have to e-mail Saris to find out the correct setting for my Forester but Saris responded almost immediately. Seems like a winner.

Found this by accident. Was browsing for a bike rack 'til a came across this on Saris website. I was intrigue by the limited amount of straps--just 2! Unlike other racks that I've seen and used gone are the "spider," nylon straps that take forever to adjust and remove. Once you've measured out placement, set the straps {only 2}, click it, and done! I drive a BMW 3 series and the metal hooks are covered with rubber, so no scratches. Most of all the rack is stable no matter if your cornering a ramp at 80!
